Readily Accessible

Q. Do you know where in the code it states that a generator should be readily accessible? We have a contractor that does not want to put in a generator platform. The genset has a belly tank that is about 4’ high.

A. NFPA 110, 5.6.3.4 states: “The instruments required in 5.6.3.3(1) through 5.6.3.3(4) shall be placed on an enclosed panel, located din proximity to or on the energy converter, in a location that allows maintenance personnel to observe them readily. The enclosed panel shall be mounted by means of anti-shock vibration mountings if mounted on the energy converter.” It is standard practice to erect a platform or catwalk so the control panel is visible. See pictures below….this one has a 5000 gallon belly tank.
