Fuel Feeding

Q. Dan, Are there any requirements in the Joint’s standards that indicate you can’t have generator fuel fed from the same tank as the boilers? J.F.

A. The Joint Commission doesn’t address this issue specifically. NFPA 110, 5.5.1.1 addresses it at:

(I have always thought that the term “enclosed” should be changed to something more descriptive than described at: 3.3.6.2 Enclosed Fuel Tank.  A fuel tank located within a separate room, separated from other equipment.)

The Joint however, can ask the hospital if the proper precautions, fail-safes, alarms, etc., have been installed to prevent non-compliance with 5.5.1.1.
